The closest thing to permanent residency. Still requires periodic renewal.
From passport to settled
None of this is complicated. It just requires knowing which door to open.
Decide how long you want to stay
Under 60 days? VOA at the airport. Longer? You need a B211A, E33G, or KITAS before arrival (or extend your VOA while in-country).
Gather your documents
Passport photos, bank statements, sponsor letters, or company registration — requirements vary by visa type. A good agent will tell you exactly what to prepare.
Apply online or through an agent
VOA is paid at the airport. Everything else goes through the immigration portal (imigrasi.go.id) or a licensed visa agent. Agent route saves 2-3 weeks of back-and-forth.
Arrive, register, live
Report to local immigration within 24 hours of arrival. Your sponsor or agent handles the STM (reporting letter). After that, you are legal and free to explore.
Practical notes for Rote
Nearest immigration office
Kupang, West Timor — a 25-minute flight or overnight ferry from Rote. Most visa processing happens there or online. A local agent saves significant travel.
Family dependents
Since December 2025, most visa categories allow spouse and children on a single application. This includes B211A, KITAS, and KITAP.
Tax residency warning
Spending 183+ days per year in Indonesia makes you a tax resident. Foreign-sourced income may be taxable. Consult a tax advisor before committing to a long-term structure.
E33G does not lead to KITAP
The Digital Nomad Visa is a standalone permit. Years on E33G do not count toward the KITAP requirement. If permanent residency is your goal, start with Investor KITAS.
Use an agent
Immigration forms are in Bahasa Indonesia. Errors cause delays. A licensed agent costs $100-300 on top of official fees and handles everything from submission to pickup.
Keep copies of everything
Photo your passport, visa stamp, KITAS card, and STM letter. Store them in the cloud. Lost documents on a remote island are a real problem.
